The Jazz in the Shade band — the four musicians and the vocalist at the University of Debrecen

The Jazz in the Shade band

Since 2014 we have played nothing but timeless jazz standards, live. Our core line-up is a quartet, joined by a vocalist on request. We play so that the music sets the mood without demanding attention.

Our story

From duo to quartet

We started out in 2014 as a duo — piano and saxophone, a line-up that fits into the smallest of spaces. That duo is still part of what we offer, for intimate occasions in small rooms — typically exhibition openings.

Feedback over the years, and our own experience, led us to move to a four-piece line-up — piano, saxophone, double bass and drums give a much richer sound than a duo. Today the quartet is our core line-up, and the duo remains a small-format option for the right occasion.

How we play

We play in the background so that you stay centre stage

We play in sets, at a volume that suits the room: quieter on arrival and over drinks, livelier towards the end of dinner. The aim is always the same: music that sets the mood without demanding attention.

How far we travel

The band is based in Debrecen, but we take bookings up to about three hours' drive away — which includes Budapest and the eastern half of Hungary, and in some cases across the border: we have played in Romania too. We don't go further than that, because a long journey means a tired band and an unnecessary surcharge.
