Conversation-friendly live music that never intrudes — melodic jazz standards, played by a quartet, with solo saxophone for the ceremony if you'd like.
Conversation-friendly live background music lifts the whole event, and your guests can keep talking throughout. In practice, that means playing in sets, at a volume that suits the room, from arrival right through to the end of dinner.
The same flexibility applies to the line-up: solo saxophone for the ceremony, the full quartet from the welcome drinks onwards — scaled down to a trio where space is particularly tight. The quartet can also be joined by a vocalist on request.

Our core line-up is a four-piece: piano, tenor saxophone, double bass and drums. The full quartet plays from the welcome drinks through to the end of dinner — after which we hand over to the DJ.

We read the room throughout — quieter on arrival and over drinks, livelier towards the end of dinner.
In our current quartet line-up, every instrument is played live — no backing tracks, no half-measures.

We don't depend on the venue's equipment, and a modest area of about 3 × 4 metres is enough for us. Indoors, our system covers around 70–100 guests — for a larger or more open venue we'd recommend a separate sound system.
We play in sets of about an hour with 15-minute breaks — and we can also provide music in the same style during the breaks.
After dinner we hand over to the DJ smoothly, with no technical hitches — no awkward silence in between.
"…we wanted background music that would lift both the mood and the standard of the evening. Jazz in the Shade delivered all of it, and went beyond what we had imagined. They read the room beautifully and shaped the music around it."

Request a quoteThe band is based in Debrecen, but we take bookings up to about three hours' drive away — which includes Budapest and the eastern half of Hungary, and in some cases across the border: we have played in Romania too. We don't go further than that, because a long journey means a tired band and an unnecessary surcharge.
